Column model of the Atmosphere

The column model of the Atmosphere is a true subset of the Earth System model Planet Simulator. It allows idealized climate simulations with a prescribed adiabatic dynamics. Since the column model is a true subset of the Earth System model it is possible to precisely study the interplay between adiabatic and diabatic processes. At the same time it is a testbed for radiation and convection parameterizations. By coupling an ensemble of columns it is possible to create specifically tailored climate networks. So far two columns can be coupled. For more details see the PlanetSimulator.

Aqua Planet

The Aqua Planet is a special mode of a General Circulation Model  which allows the study of the hydrological cycle under strongly idealized boundary and forcing conditions. The aqua-planet mode is implemented in the Planet Simulator, which provides a flexible tool to investigate the global hydrological cycle under well controllable conditions.

A new idealized radiation transfer scheme is developed. Using the two-stream approximation the radiative transfer problem is solved  explicitly using the operator matrix method. The solution for a plane parallel atmosphere consisting of n homogeneous layers is given explicitly, this allows a better control of numerical implementation.

It is hoped that the analytical solution can lead to a fast numerical implementation. The final goal is to obtain a fast portable but still physically grounded radiation scheme which allows a smooth and consistent transition from idealized to more realistic studies of Earth, Paleo Earth and other Planets.
