New publication "Winning Minds", edited by Jochen Roose & Mike S. Schäfer

Forschungsjournal Soziale Bewegungen, Vol. 25 (2012), No. 2. Lucius&Lucius, 140 Pages. Description: Climate change is one of the great challenges of contemporary societies. Mobilization of movements has brought the issue to the center of society. But the problem is not solved - the dispute over responsibilities and solutions only has begun. A key question is, who can win over public opinion in order to enforce his interpretation of the problem and its solutions. Various campaigns and a number of prominent conflicts over the interpretation of the problem are the result of this situation. This issue of the Research Journal Social Movements sheds light on this debate and the strategies to influence public opinion. How do business, science, politics and NGOs act? In what way do they try to win the public for their interpretations and solutions? What role do the media play? And how do public perceptions and the mobilization of the public (in a broad sense) develop over time? With the study of campaigns on climate issues trying to mobilize public opinion, the research journal focusses on one major and permanent current political debate. It demonstrates the very real conflicts, but also - from a broader perspective - the strategies for obtaining / manipulating public opinion. In this way the struggle over climate change and protection exemplarily shows strategies and logics of public campaigns in controversial policy areas.
