Adaptive DG methods for simulating inundation
Inundations due to storm surges pose an increasingly dangerous hazard to coastal areas. Therefore precise prediction of storm surges is an attempt to investigate the risk by helping to develop warning systems and planning tools.
The simulation of storm surges and inundation is a very challenging task. The computation of shallow water equations on triangulations with the utilization of advanced numerical methods still leaves great potential for research - especially when wetting and drying boundary conditions are considered.
On that account a new adaptive storm surge model is developed based on state-of-the-art numerical methods (discontinuous Galerkin and finite volume schemes) on triangular meshes. New meshing stategies based on space-filling curve linearization are developed, implemented and validated in order to guarantee accurate numerical results. Thereby special emphasis is also placed on computational efficiency.
