Influence of the cryosphere on the ocean circulation and associated sea level changes

The mass balance of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) will be simulated on a larger scale. Regionally, the response of Pine Island Glacier to external sea level change originating from Greenland will be analyzed, and its contribution to future sea level change will be estimated, using a full-Stokes ice model. These results are fed into global ocean simulations as freshwater input and result in global sea level change estimations originating from the WAIS. In collaboration with the CRG Numerical Methods, existing multi-scale numerical methods for ocean simulations will be applied to regional and local studies of ocean-shelf ice interaction, by which large-scale ocean processes can trigger small-scale local ice dynamics.
