This key research area focuses on the natural sciences; in particular, questions about climate variability and predictability, feedback mechanisms in the climate system and lately, regional and global sea level rises: How do external disturbances impact climate predictability? What crucial climate and carbon cycle interactions can a 100-year timescale indicate? What threshold values are critical, e.g., in assessing tropical rainfall or shifts in monsoon circulation and margins? To what extent can oceanic heat absorption curb global change and what sea level variations and changes will follow?
