CliSAP successfully finished in 2018. Climate research continues in the Cluster of Excellence "CLICCS".

Sediment composition characteristics as proxies for the wind climate

The storm activity of past times may affect patterns and characteristics of sedimentation processes, on the ocean ground as well as on land. E.g. granulometric composition (grain-size and sorting) of the ground layers is a influenced by wind strength and their spatial orientation reflects the prevailing wind direction. Sediment proxies are taken from the ocean ground during ship cruises, e.g. in the Caribbean.

Such indirect proxy data are used to derive storm characteristics at CLISAP-2 members DWD and at the Institute of Geology and Paleontology of the University Hamburg.
