Visiting CliSAP: Hai Hoang Bui

Hai Hoang Bui (PhD) will join the CliSAP Research Group “Regional Storms and their Marine Impacts” as a guest researcher for a five-week period, starting on the 15th of July. Born in Vietnam, Bui has been working as a meteorologist at the Faculty of Hydro-Meteorology and Oceanography, Vietnam National University (VNU). Previously involved in the development of a Regional Climate Model at the VNU, at CliSAP he will contribute valuable skills concerning the analysis of numerical simulations. In the following interview, he talks about his previous work, as well as his personal and professional expectations regarding the trip.

Guest researcher Hai Hoang Bui

CliSAP: Mr. Bui, could you please tell us what made you choose to work at the Cluster of Excellence CliSAP for a time?

Bui: I was invited by Dr. Frauke Feser to visit the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) and to work with the General Circulation Model (GCM) and Regional Climate Model (RCM) simulations.

CliSAP: How long have you been interested in climate research and why does it fascinate you?

Bui: In 2010, I was involved in a project at the Vietnam National University (VNU) on seasonal forecasting in Vietnam, in which I developed a Tropical Cyclone detection program for the Regional Climate Model (RegCM). Later, I collaborated with a research group at Kyoto University on the simulation of QBO, like in an idealized numerical model. My interest in climate research grew gradually and naturally during the periods I was working on those projects.

CliSAP: Not everybody at the Cluster of Excellence studied Meteorology. Could you explain in layman’s terms what you want to work on while you are at CliSAP?

Bui: I would like to study the output of the numerical models to determine how frequently extreme events (such as storms) occur, if the model results are close to our observations and how we can better project results in the future.

CliSAP: How will CliSAP benefit from your experience in the field of numerical simulation and mathematical models? And what will you take with you when you go back home?

Bui: I hope my experience in numerical simulation and model output statistics can help to refine CliSAP’s current climate model, for example with regard to extreme event detection. I hope I will gain more experience working in an advanced scientific setting such as CliSAP and learning more about the applications of climate model simulation, which I can then apply in my own country.

CliSAP: Which expectations do you have concerning your time in Hamburg?

Bui: Since it’s a relatively short period of one-and-a-half months, I wouldn’t expect too much from the trip, but I do hope we can establish some scheme or program for solving a specific problem. More importantly, I hope that it will promote understanding and future collaboration between German and Vietnamese researchers.
