In his lecture, "Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics of the Climate System(s)", Lucarini demonstrated the high complexity of the earth system and the demands this makes on modeling it. One focus of his research is the investigation of tipping points in the climate system, where irreversible developments can set in.
Many honors have been bestowed on the Italian, Lucarini, for example from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge. Since 2008 he has been a guest professor at the University of Hamburg several times. In his new professorship for Theoretical Meteorology, his work will connect physical and meteorological aspects. At the KlimaCampus he investigates the thermodynamics of the climate system and is also head of the research project "NAMASTE", which he initiated.
In his laudation, Prof. Detlef Stammer praised not only the excellence of Lucarini’s work and cooperation at the KlimaCampus but also his pleasant personality. Prof. Martin Claußen, speaker of the Cluster of Excellence CliSAP, described Lucarini as an excellent colleague and a valuable assest for climate research in Hamburg.
