The Influential Climate Researcher - Professor Hans von Storch

20.01.2011

The current issue of the news magazine “Focus” lists the “One hundred most influential Germans”. In its category “Research”, the magazine includes Professor Hans von Storch, Director of the Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, describing him as an extraordinary “climate realist.”

Thinkers, politicians, athletes, artists and researchers: the news magazine Focus presents those people that have particular influence over our society in the current issue. Among them Professor Hans von Storch, whose work Focus describes as follows:

Hans von Storch, 61, the climate realist – He is a stranger to apocalyptic rumblings. Smart adaptation to climate change is Hans von Storch’s credo. The climate researcher from the University of Hamburg does not belong among the skeptics, but instead believes like the majority of his colleagues that global warming is a fact. Given that numerous exaggerations made in climate scenarios have been exposed over the past years, it is his matter-of-fact argumentation that will receive more attention in the future.

“Climate research is always a project completed with a number of colleagues whose collective results can exercise a certain influence. Nonetheless, I am happy with this nomination, because it shows that a realistic approach to our knowledge of the climate is finding increased acceptance in the media,” commented Hans von Storch, Director of the Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and Professor at the Meteorological Institute at the University of Hamburg in the article.
