Economics is About Making Choices: An Interview with Prof. Dr. Michael Funke

This month, the Interview series “Climate Research Made in Hamburg” is introducing Prof. Dr. Michael Funke. Funke is a Professor at the University of Hamburg’s Department of Economics and Chairman of the Standing Committee at the Verein für Socialpolitik.

How to deal with the uncertainties surrounding climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing us in adapting to climate change. Science’s recommendations for action on climate policy and in climate-sensitive areas of business have to account for these uncertainties. For the scientist, understanding how climate policies are dealt with, and what the reactions are in climate-sensitive areas of business, are essential in any “action we take on uncertainties.”

Michael Funke is currently working within CliSAP to develop analytical methods for just this purpose. In doing so, study of how to deal with extreme climate events is also being incorporated. The researcher assumes that the damages from extreme events could be distributed differently due to future climate change.

CliSAP is concerned with the ecological, economic and social interactions of climate change. This approach allows for a better study of the effects of climate change not only on industrialized countries, but also in emerging and developing nations.

Prof. Dr. Hans von Storch, Director of the Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and Jun. Prof. Dr. Mike S. Schaefer, Director of the “Media Constructions” working group at the KlimaCampus Hamburg spoke with Michael Funke.
