What climate policy does society want? An interview with Andreas Schmidt

21.09.2012

This month the interview series "Climate research made in Hamburg" presents sociologist Andreas Schmidt. A member of the CliSAP research group "Media constructions of climate change", he is taking a closer look at how climate change is presented and discussed in the media and in wider society.

Has climate change become established as a societal problem in need of political action? What are the demands put forward by non-governmental organisations, political decision-makers and economic actors with respect to the processes for dealing with climate change? Do Germany, India and the USA have similar preferences in climate change policy ? These are the questions investigated by Andreas Schmidt.

In his dissertation Andreas Schmidt analyses the media debate on climate change and how this is influenced by different actors within society. After all, media coverage is essential in forming public opinion and also a key influence on political action.

The interview was conducted by Prof. Dr. Hans von Storch, Director of the Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht.
