Now, with modeling approaches developed at the KlimaCampus, the effects of this and other scenarios can be tested. It is even possible to carry out analyses of changes within individual urban canyons in major cities. At yesterday´s conference entitled "Hamburg´s Climate – No Problem?" Prof. Heinke Schlünzen presented preliminary results on the study of roofing, saying "On average, greening Hamburg´s roofs would cool the city on a very warm night by about one-half of one degree Celsius."
About 100 people from the city´s administration, universities, planning offices and environmental organizations attended the conference in the Bürgerhaus Wilhelmsburg at the invitation of Hamburg´s Office of Urban Planning and Environment. A further topic: What are other cities doing? Representatives from Stuttgart, Hannover, Berlin as well as from the Ruhr district presented concepts and results from their efforts to adapt to climate change.
That this meeting did not simply deal with abstract theories is illustrated by the summer of 2003, when there were over 70,000 heat-related deaths. The implementation of reasonable measures to adapt to climate, however, continue to fail in the face of economic and political resistance, even though green areas and ventilation channels improve urban climates. Nonetheless, among the specialists at the meeting, there were both optimism and examples of successful projects. Urban quality of life can be significantly improved through the greening of roofs, house fronts, railways and parking garages, for example. The conclusion of the day: the effect of climate on parks and green areas is limited locally. Green areas should be brought to the citizens, rather than the citizens having to seek out the green.
