New award for Klaus Fraedrich

Prof. Dr. Klaus Fraedrich received the Alfred Wegener Medal for 2010 of the German Meteorological Society (DMG). For the Head of the research group "Theoretical Meteorology" of the University of Hamburg, this is the second award in this year.

The medal was awarded yesterday evening in connection with the opening ceremony of the DACH Meteorologists Conference. The award speech was given by Prof. Dr. Joseph Egger, the former Head of the Meteorology Institute at the University of Munich. Explaining its decision, the committee emphasized in particular Prof. Fraedrichs pioneering contributions to the application of non-linear dynamics in meteorology, the development of a hierarchy of climate models as well as the advancement of classical concepts in climatology.

The Alfred Wegener Medal

The German Meteorological Society has been awarding the Alfred Wegener Medal since the year 1968. It aims to honor scientists of extraordinary merit in the field of meteorology. The Alfred Wegener Medal is awarded every three years, selected by a committee of three, including the President of the DMG.
