As of 2013 several new buildings will be constructed around the Geomatikum in the course of different building phases to house the cluster of excellence CliSAP, the geosciences department of the university and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. That means that the scientists of the participating institutes can work together in the near vicinity of one another - something all have been wishing for for some time now. In addition, several central campus spaces, some of them opening into the city quarter, will be created. Tree-filled spaces will be conserved.
Science Senator Dr. Dorothee Stapelfeldt presented the jury decision and thanked all of the participants in the accompanying dialog with the local residents. Viewpoints were also given by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Prof. Heinrich Graener and by Dr. Torsten Sevecke, Head of the local council in Eimsbüttel.
The public opinion was mixed. As expected, not all suggestions and wishes could be accounted for. After a critical but constructive discussion, the majority of those present seemed mostly satisfied - especially by the fact that new buildings are in the concrete future.
