CliSAP successfully finished in 2018. Climate research continues in the Cluster of Excellence "CLICCS".

New Head for ocean dynamics

At the beginning of April Professor Carsten Eden started in his new position as professor for Theoretical Oceanography at the Institute of Physical Oceanography. This means that the classical fields of dynamical oceanography, theory and modeling have again a Chair for research and teaching - now with a few new foci.

Understanding basin scale circulation of the ocean as well as effects and parameterizations of (sub-)mesoscale variability will be the focus of the group. For climate research, the coupling of physical and biogeochemical models will also be important for the simulation of climate relevant carbon cycles.

This semester Prof. Eden will begin (German-language) lectures on "Theoretical oceanography -waves and turbulence".

Prof. Eden succeeds Prof. Jürgen Sündermann in the professorship. Before coming to Hamburg he was on the scientific staff of the IFM-GEOMAR in Kiel, where he completed his "Habilitation" in 2006. He was a member of the Cluster of Excellence "Future Ocean" and participated in a number of national and international research projects.

A "Kieler" can quickly get used to living in Hamburg, says Prof. Eden. At the moment he is still commuting between Kiel and Hamburg, but he would like to move here soon and is looking for an attractive apartment near the University....
