The cooperation will primarily concern the assimilation of climate data in ocean and climate models. In addition, the exchange of models and data and the joint assessment and improvement of ocean and climate models was agreed upon.
The latter aspect also includes the assessment of the efficiency of climate models and the optimization of their performance on supercomputers.
Both the Institute of Physical Oceanography at the KlimaCampus and the Data Research Center for Marine-Earth Sciences are leaders in the field of data assimilation, and both have the goal of improving climate models through data assimilation.
The informal cooperation, which has existed for some time, was now made more concrete to facilitate the exchange of research and technology results.
An important objective is to significantly improve seasonal and decadal predictions by climate models in the next years by linking the coupled climate models to observational climate data.
