In their official statement, they stressed how he as a natural scientist successfully championed the cause of establishing a significant social sciences dimension at the Cluster of Excellence CliSAP. Further, the Faculty praised his profound interest in the sociological aspects of climate research and its own social and cultural foundations. In this regard, they claim, he also consistently critically examined the relationship between science and politics, and emphasized the unique role of climate research as a “postnormal science”, which can encounter serious difficulties because the scientific knowledge involved includes a degree of uncertainty, and because ethical values are involved, yet nonetheless rapid decisions are expected.
“As a researcher, Hans von Storch has shaped our Cluster of Excellence as a whole and the social science components of climate research in Hamburg. In this regard, he has made vital contributions to promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and a dialogue between the social, societal and natural sciences”, stated CliSAP Speaker Prof. Anita Engels.
