Understanding the Climate System: An Interview with Dr. Jin-Song von Storch

The interview series “Climate Research made in Hamburg” introduces Dr. Jin-Song von Storch this week. The meteorologist leads the “Ocean Statistics” working group at the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology and is a Senior Scientist at the Hamburg KlimaCampus. Here, she is creating the basis for numerous oceanographic research activities as coordinator of the “STORM Project”.

The climate is a complex system that is influenced by many different aspects. Analyzed individually, each of these facets of the climate is well understood, at least in part. The challenge lays in learning how these aspects interact, determining the reactions of some elements to others, and both detecting and understanding the new processes that result from these dynamics.

Jin-Song von Storch would like to understand these known and unknown processes, along with the dynamics of the climate’s and earth’s systems. She researches how innumerable small-scale processes affect the whole climate system. With the help of these findings, climate and earth system models can be further refined, and can better simulate future developments in the atmosphere and oceans.
