World Climate Research Panel Heads of international climate research to meet at the KlimaCampus</br>

A group of around 30 high-ranking scientists will be meeting here next week to set the agenda for climate observation and analysis in the next decades. WOAP, short for the Observation and Assimilation Panel of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), will meet from 29 to 31 March 2010 at the KlimaCampus of the University of Hamburg. The guests include the WCRP Director, Ghassem Asrar, Carolin Richter (Director of the Global Climate Observation Panel), Antonio Busalacchi (Chairman of the Joint Scientific Committee) and Barbara Ryan (Director of the WMO Space Programme). The Cluster of Excellence of the KlimaCampus has also been represented in the group for many years.

An important topic of the meeting this year is the so-called climate relevant reprocessing of satellite data from the European Space Agency ESA. For this, researchers will be applying new quality standards to existing data sets, thus considerably improving climate observations. In addition to the WCRP research activities of the next decades, there will also be a focus on climate service aspects. For example, which data and methods are necessary in order to improve the quality of short-term climate prediction for the next 10 to 20 years?

Host and WOAP member Prof. Detlef Stammer of the KlimaCampus emphasizes the important role of the international and interdisciplinary cooperation in the panel. No single country would be able to compile all the data. WOAP supports the continuous collection of high quality climate data and ensures that measurement series are comprehensive and systematic in their coverage. The scientists thus make an important contribution to the climate report of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).
