This weekly news gives you information on various news, events, funding options, and open positions, which might not be only in interest for young researchers. As in the previous year, CliSAP/CEN will be present at EGU General Assembly, this year from 23 to 28 April in Vienna. The meeting programme has just been published online. We will create a list with all CEN and CliSAP presentations (oral and posters) at EGU for the webpage. Please let us know your title and time. You are warmly invited to come by our booth #17 (yellow level 0).

AGU Fall Meeting: Call for Proposals

Shape the scientific program and set the agenda for the 2017 Fall Meeting from December  11-15 in New Orleans, Louisiana, by submitting a session proposal. All fields of scientific interest will be well-represented at the most influential gathering of Earth and space scientists in the world. This year sessions on the topics of data & emerging technologies and geohealth are of particular interest to the Fall Meeting Program Committee. Deadline for proposals: 19 April 2017

Ressortforschungsplan 2017 und Forschungsrahmen des BMUB *Information only in German*

Das Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, Bau und Reaktorsicherheit (BMUB) benötigt für die Umsetzung seiner politischen Ziele wissenschaftlich fundierte Entscheidungsgrundlagen und -hilfen. Dazu leistet die Ressortforschung des BMUB als Brücke zwischen Forschung und Bundespolitik einen wesentlichen Beitrag. Sie richtet sich an den Prioritäten und Zielsetzungen des Hauses aus. Der dazu erforderliche, mittelfristige Forschungsbedarf des BMUB wird in einem Forschungsrahmen beschrieben.

EU-expert group on the future of scientific publishing

“Open Science” refers to the possibilities and implications of digital/ web-based technologies in research with the aim of transforming the entire research process to make it more open, replicable and re-usable. This development offers new possibilities for the production and application of scientific knowledge in the research sector itself as well as in business and society as research results become reproducible and accessible for innovation processes. "Open Science" refers to a broad sphere of activities including open access to publications and the re-use of research data. Additionally, further development of scientific evaluation systems, support of professional expertise in dealing with research data and involvement of society in the research process (Citizen Science) are part of these activities. EXIST Business Start-up Grant

The EXIST Business Start-up Grant of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy supports students, graduates and scientists from universities and research institutes who want to turn their business idea into a business plan. The start-up projects should be innovative technology or knowledge based projects with significant unique features and good commercial prospects of success. Applications can be submitted by scientists, graduates, students, and entrepreneurs any time, but not later than 2019.

EXIST Transfer of Research

EXIST Transfer of Research Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy supports outstanding research oriented projects that involve expensive and high-risk resource development. EXIST Transfer of Research has two phases of funding: In the first phase, results of research that have the potential of becoming the basis of a start-up business are developed further. In the second phase of funding further resource development, measures to start business operations and meeting the prerequisites for external business financing are at the center of interest.

GfÖ Awards

Since 2007, the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland (GfÖ) has given awards for outstanding theses, applied projects and photographs in ecology. The awards for theses are given in the categories PhD/doctoral thesis and Master-/Diploma-Thesis. The winners receive their awards at the Award Session of the GfÖ Annual Conference. During the ceremony, the laureates present their theses, projects and photographs, respectively. Participation in the conference is free for the winners of the awards. Deadline for proposals: 15 April 2017

Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis Forschung: Umgang mit Wasser *Information only in German - international applicants are welcome*

In diesem Jahr werden Forscherinnen und Forscher oder Forschungsteams ausgezeichnet, die Lösungswege für den nachhaltigen Umgang mit Wasser entwickeln. Gesucht werden anwendungsnahe Forschungsprojekte. Teilnahmeberechtigt sind einzelne ForscherInnen oder Forschergruppen aus deutschen Forschungseinrichtungen, Hochschulen und Unternehmen; Kooperationen auf EU- bzw. internationaler Ebene sind willkommen. Die Projekte sollen nicht länger als 24 Monate abgeschlossen sein. Laufende Projekte können eingereicht werden, wenn (erste) Ergebnisse und ihre praktische Umsetzung deutlich erkennbar sind. Höffmann-Wissenschaftspreis für Interkulturelle Kompetenz 2017 *Information only in German - international applicants are welcome*

Jährlich verleiht die Universität Vechta den Höffmann-Wissenschaftspreis für Interkulturelle Kompetenz. Er wird gestiftet vom Reiseunternehmer Hans Höffmann und ist mit einem Preisgeld in Höhe von 10.000 Euro dotiert. Im Fokus des Preises steht die Förderung interkultureller Kompetenz. Interkulturelle Fragestellungen sind in vielfältiger Weise integrativer Bestandteil wissenschaftlicher Forschung zahlreicher Disziplinen. Der Höffmann-Wissenschaftspreis möchte das Werk einer/eines herausragenden Wissenschaftlerin/Wissenschaftlers auszeichnen, die/der wegweisende Arbeiten zu Themenfeldern der interkulturellen Kompetenz vorgelegt hat. The Met-jobs mailing list has been used for over a decade for receiving regular (free) mailings of job adverts in meteorology, oceanography and climatology (including vacancies in research, forecasting, technical support, and also course/study vacancies), or advertising job openings to members of the meteorological/oceanographic community. The list has almost 13,000 subscribers and circulates over 1,100 adverts per year. Adverts posted in recent months include those for Academic/Scientist positions, Analysts, Consultants, Management (including Professorial and Director positions), Masters and PhD courses, Technical and Work Experience positions. 

Senior Scientist (m/f) at HZG

The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), an independent scientific establishment within the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Materials and Coastal Research, invites applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f), as soon as possible, as part of the German research activity HAPPI-DE. Within HAPPI-DE the German contribution to the international HAPPI (Half a degree Additional warming, Prognosis and Projected Impacts) project will be conducted. The main aim of the project is to analyze differences in climate change risks between 1.5°C and 2°C warming compared to pre-industrial times. HAPPI-DE results will also contribute to the IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C (SR1.5). Application deadline: 11 April 2017

Junior Professor (W1 with Tenure Track) of Data Assimilation in the Earth System

The Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Hohenheim invites applications for the position of a Junior Professor (W1 with Tenure Track) of Data Assimilation in the Earth System at the Institute of Physics and Meteorology to be filled as soon as possible. The successful candidate is expected to develop new methods for assimilating relevant observations of the soil-vegetation-atmosphere system. The candidate is expected to possess excellent research qualifications in data assimilation and in modeling on the convective scale. Expertise in remote sensing of the Earth system is desired. Teaching obligations comprise contributions to teaching mathematics and physics in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. At the beginning, the teaching load will comprise four contact hours per week and will be increased to six contact hours per week after a successful interim evaluation.
