The CliSAP/CEN Research Coordination collects all interesting information on funding, scholarships and the national/international research landscape for the geoscientific community. The newsletter comes out every Wednesday.

Today, we want to draw your attention to many different opportunities, including open positions, a call for collaborations in the Baltic area (Landesforschungsförderung), support for research stays and two interesting prizes.

Project funding

  • Landesforschungsförderung Hamburg - Ausschreibung Herbst 2016 - Schwerpunkt Ostseeraum:

  • Reinhart Koselleck Projects – funding for high-risk projects:
    Purpose is to enable outstanding researchers with a proven scientific track record to pursue exceptionally innovative or higher-risk projects. Funding can cover staff, scientific instrumentation, consumables, travel, miscellaneous and publication costs. Applicants may request funding from €500,000 up to €1.25 million, for five years, in increments of €250,000.
  • Trilateral projects with Israel and Palestine:
    Purpose is the funding of trilateral projects with the involvement of German, Israeli and Palestinian researchers is intended to support peaceful development in the Middle East. In suitable cases, instead of or in addition to the Palestinian partner, a researcher from another neighboring country of Israel may be integrated in a trilateral project.
  • Experiment! - In search of bold research ideas:
    The funding initiative 'Experiment!' supports radically new research concepts in science, engineering as well as in the life sciences through a fast small grant scheme.

Position funding

Lichtenberg Professorships:
The Volkswagen Foundation combines support both for individual researchers as well as institutions via the funding initiative “Lichtenberg Professorships”. Outstanding (young) researchers are offered a tenure-track at a university of their choice in Germany, enabling them to carry out independent research in innovative and interdisciplinary areas for longer periods of time.

International exchange

  • *European citizens only* CANON Foundation Research Fellowships for Japan:
    The Canon Foundation in Europe grants up to 15 Fellowships to highly qualified European and Japanese researchers. European Fellows are expected to pursue a period of research in Japan whereas Japanese Fellows are expected to do their research in Europe.
    Canon Foundation Fellowships are for a minimum period of three months up to maximum of one year.
    They support all fields of research. There are no limitations or restrictions. Applicants do not have to be currently enrolled or employed at the time of applying.
    Deadline: September 15, 2016
  • DFG Early career research fellowships:
    Purpose is to enable researchers at an early stage of their scientific career to carry out a clearly defined research project at a place of their choice abroad or to acquaint themselves with new scientific research methods.
    Eligible are
    • German researchers from all disciplines who have completed their academic qualifications (doctorate)
    • International researchers from all disciplines who have completed their scientific training (doctorate)
  • DFG Max Kade Foundation Fellowship Programme:
    Purpose is to enable applicants from the fields of natural sciences and medicine to apply for a one-year research stay in the USA.
    Eligible are well-qualified early career researchers (generally those within 12 years of having obtained their doctorate) who have proven themselves in their fields through several years of research or outstanding research achievements
  • Second collective program calls of the German Academic Exchange Service:
    Die Ausschreibung enthält eine Übersicht über die Programme zur Internationalisierung von Studium und Lehre sowie die Programme zur Internationalisierung von Forschung und Doktorandenausbildung.

Event funding

  • DFG Funding for international scientific events:
    • International specialist conferences: Integrative lecture event with a specific topic and focus on a European audience; a variant of the Gordon Conference
    • International congress, symposium, colloquia, workshop: International scientific event of particular significance for a specific subject area with a large number of participants from both Germany and abroad; held in a different country each year
    • Annual meeting: A regularly recurring meeting of a German specialist society, working group or specialist group; event of national significance with a clearly defined topic and international participation
  • Volkswagen Stiftung: Symposia and Summer Schools:
    The Volkswagen Foundation set up the funding initiative “Symposia and Summer Schools” to support events in all subject areas dealing with new ideas and research approaches. The Foundation also aims to encourage innovative event formats as well as new ways of supporting interaction and networking among the participants.
