ZOOM: An interactive climate system exhibit
The Outreach team developed ZOOM in close cooperation with CliSAP´s researchers and an agency to give an insight into the climate system.
The hands-on exhibit playfully demonstrates different correlations within the climate system. Atmosphere and oceans, pastures and forests, land ice, consumption and pollution – all these factors affect the climate and are interlinked.
Experimenting with ZOOM, visitors can check out these relations in real-time. They close down factories and clear the rain forest, gauge the sun´s intensity and let volcanoes erupt – and can immediately watch the reaction of the system.
The effect of each single factor was transformed into a complex system of equations. For each of the 1.280 possible settings the changes resulting for individual climatic factors were calculated.
The exhibit is portable and is currently displayed during conferences and exhibitions. Once the new building “Haus der Erde” at the Geomatikum is completed, ZOOM will be open to visitors and school children in its foyer. The game is available in English and German.
