CliSAP Prospects

CEN – Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability

The German Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments will expire in 2017. In order to further expand the research groundwork laid by CliSAP, the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) was founded in 2011.

Universität Hamburg’s will continue its interdisciplinary endeavor at the CEN, uniting oceanographers, meteorologists, marine biologists, geophysicists, geologists, soil scientists, geographers, biogeochemists as well as economists and social scientists. The CEN can build on CliSAP’s efficient partnerships with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (Centre for Materials and Coastal Research, HZG), the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ), and further climate research institutions.

KlimaCampus Hamburg

In 2009, the Cluster of Excellence became the driving force behind Hamburg’s successful climate studies network KlimaCampus. Among the University’s initial partners are the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (Centre for Materials and Coastal Research, HZG), and the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ). Soon, numerous institutions joined in such as the German National Meteorological Service (DWD) and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (BSH). KlimaCampus provides a collaborative network for all climate-related issues, especially climatic change and its repercussions. One of its offsprings is the KlimaCampus Colloquium. Preparations for further network projects are underway.
