Urban Climate Research: New boost from Oklahoma

03.02.2010

Prof. Petra Klein, a leading expert in urban meteorology, will be carrying out research at the Department of Technical Meteorology in the Geomatikum from January to June. Her hosts here at the KlimaCampus are Professor Michael Schatzmann and Professor Bernd Leitl of the Meteorological Institute.

During her stay as a CliSAP guest researcher, Prof. Klein would like to verify a new urban climate zone classification. It is based on high resolution data from the  „Oklahoma City Micronet“, a small-scale meteorological measurement network in Oklahoma City.In addition, she would like to develop improved urban parametrisations for turbulent fluxes with the help of data sets from Hamburg´s wind tunnel.

This work has a high relevance for the CliSAP focus "Urban Systems" (D4). Her expertise is also extremely useful for the planning of the measurement locations of the ´Hamburg Urban Soil Climate Observatory - HUSCO´.
