Dr. Ekkehard Nümann, chairman of the foundation Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung, will award the prize to Dr. Sebastian Bathiany during a festive event at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce on 28 August 2014. Hamburg´s Deputy Mayor and Senator for Science and Research, Dr. Dorothee Stapelfeldt, will attend the event. The foundation awards the “Werner-von-Melle-Preis” (endowed with € 10.000) to excellent doctoral dissertations. This year the foundation awards the prize to climate research. Doctoral theses submitted must have a distinct social dimension. The award is designed to encourage outstanding young scholars to pursue their academic careers.

In his dissertation Bathiany reconstructs the causes and conditions of abrupt climate change using the example of the Sahara 5000 years ago. He has developed a new method which not only provides an interpretation for climate change in Sahara, but it is also capable of identifying sensitive regions of the climate system in climate models.
