Ocean Atlas of the Atlantic now online

08.10.2010

Viktor Gouretski from the Integrated Climate Data Centre (ICDC) of the KlimaCampus has now made 86 hydrographic charts of the Atlantic available in the Web. The ocean charts show parameters such as temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients and density for depths from 200 meters down to the sea floor in more than 3,500 meters. The colored presentations give a vivid impression and permit good visual comparisons.

The data are from the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE). Within the framework of this project, more than 30 nations carried out expeditions from 1990 to 1990, providing a coordinated survey of the entire ocean. The observations from research vessels and satellites have thus provided a unique data set as a basis for atlases. Up to now these have been published for the Southern Ocean and the Pacific. The hydrographic data for the Atlantic were processed by Gouretski, qualitatively adapted and compared with historical data. The entire data basis, the WOCE Climatology of the World Oceans, is also available online.
