Fisheries Biologists Receive American Science Award

21.07.2010

Prof. Christian Möllmann of the Institute for Hydrobiology and Fisheries Science at the KlimaCampus will receive the American Sustainability Science Award of 2010 for his paper on sustainable fisheries management.

The Ecological Society of America (ESA) is presenting the award to Möllmann and his co-authors – Martin Lindegren, Anders Nielsen und Nils Christian Stenseth – for the paper „Preventing the Collapse of the Baltic cod stock through an ecosystem-based management approach“ (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2009). The award ceremony will take place during the ESA annual meeting at the beginning of August in Pittsburgh.

In cooperation with fisheries biologists from Denmark and Norway, Möllmann developed a computer model for sustainable fisheries management. Based on factors such as pressure by fishing, salinity of the water and further environmental conditions, the model predicts the development of the cod stocks in the Baltic Sea. The results show that an ecologically based fisheries management could prevent another collapse of the cod stocks.
